Be bold, embrace change and unleash your potential.
In our group, you will conduct fundamental and applied research in functional materials, novel device architectures, and new compute blocks to improve the energy-latency-accuracy-resilience of next generation compute system for exciting applications such as intermittent computing, in memory computing, resilient computing, cryogenic computing, stochastic computing and bio-inspired computing.
We are the host and member of ASCENT (Applications and Systems-Driven Center for Energy-Efficient Integrated NanoTechnologies) – the nation’s premier microelectronics research center funded by the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The center’s mission is to provide breakthrough advances in semiconductors to continue device and system performance scaling. By virtue of this Center, the student researchers interact closely with DARPA program managers and consultants as well as technologists from companies like Intel, Micron, IBM, Samsung, TSMC, ARM, Applied Materials, EMD Performance Materials, SK Hynix, Analog Devices, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and others.
The Semiconductor Technology Advanced Research Laboratory (STAR Lab) pursues its research goals through first principles atomistic modeling of nanomaterials, non-equilibrium transport simulation, nanofabrication and characterization of devices and circuit prototypes. We also develop compact models for abstraction of emerging devices to explore circuits and system applications. Almost all our experimental devices are built in-house in the Notre Dame Nanofabrication facility. Our microsystems research focuses on the interplay between emerging devices and new compute models.
You will be part of a productive research group that challenges you intellectually, encourages curiosity and actively fosters an environment of teamwork and collaborative research. As a budding researcher, you will pursue competitive research at the frontier of semiconductor technology, actively collaborate with researchers from other top universities within and outside United States, and network with semiconductor industry professionals. The alumni of our group currently work at leading semiconductor companies such as Intel, Micron, IBM, Facebook, TSMC, Samsung or have joined prestigious US and international universities as faculty members.
